What is the Nigeria Professional Football League?

The Nigeria Professional Football League which is also known as the (NPFL) is the highest level of the Nigerian football league system. The league was formed 49 years ago in the year 1972 with only 6 teams but now the league consists of a total of 20 clubs from Nigeria only. On Saturday 12 May 1990 at the Onikan Stadium Lagos, the league was rechristened the “Professional League” with a goal to modernize the game and make clubs self-sufficient. The Nigeria Professional Football League is managed by the League Management Company (LMC), which is a limited liability company incorporated as a commonwealth of the participating clubs and the Federation, the purpose of the League Management Company makes sure that the league runs professionally.
Nigeria Professional Football League was formerly known as the Nigeria Premier League and is regarded as one of the strongest leagues in Africa. Some of the popularly teams form the Nigeria Professional Football League are Enyimba, Enugu Rangers, Shooting Stars and Heartland FC and Enyimba is the most successful club in Nigeria with a total of 8 championship titles. Nigeria clubs have always performed well in the CAF Champions League on a yearly basis but Enyimba are the only side to win Africa’s most prestigious club competition.
The Nigeria Professional Football League teams also participate in three domestic cups namely the Nigerian FA Cup, Nigerian Super Cup and the Super 4 (Nigeria), all of which are lucrative cups.

When does the Nigeria Professional Football League start?

The league takes place between August and May and this is the same as the European leagues. The league temporarily closes during the international breaks when club competition gives way for national competitions.

Performances over past few seasons in the Nigeria Professional Football League?
Kano Pillers has been the most successful team in the last decade winning a total three titles, and what is impressive about their titles is that they won these league titles consecutively from a period between 2012 up to 2014. Enyimba have been equally successful with two titles but what Enyimba has managed to do is they have stayed relevant over the years as they are always in the title race.
